As the calendar turns to a fresh new year, our thoughts often turn to setting new year’s resolutions and making changes in our lives, which we hope will ultimately bring us greater happiness.

Now a couple of months into the new year, are your new year’s resolutions on track? And is there something you would like to change, such as your current employment? It is common to see people considering or changing jobs around the new year, and if the change is indeed what you are looking for, there could be a few things to consider or look at as part of that change.

Employee Value Proposition (EVP) – if you’re talking to a potential new employer, ask them for their employee value proposition. EVP is a good sign that the employer has considered what they can offer their employees, the unique benefits of working for that employer and what you will get in return for working with them.

Employee testimonials – naturally, there will only be good ones on the company website, but the fact that a company has these available points to the company being an enjoyable place to work. Sometimes they’ll even list the number of years worked, retention indicators and evidence of long-term commitment to a company is an excellent sign that the company is a good one to work for.

Team Culture – look further than the company website. Do they have a social media presence, and what is the general feeling that you get from their media presence? Does it show their employees, does it give a sense of an enjoyable place to work for, and does it align with the EVP you’ve been given?

Walk-throughs – attending an interview is great, but how many companies have an open-door policy, come and have a look at us! If you’ve been in the same job for a long time, this opportunity can bring peace of mind that the decision you are making is the right one for you and the employer. A walk-through is also a great way to see the people working there. Are they happy/ smiling? Do they look overwhelmed and burnt out? Did anyone say hello, and how were you greeted when you arrived? A walk-through gives you a good “gut feel” about the company.

Employees – do you know of someone who works in the company you are considering or even ask a friend of a friend. A quick conversation with a current employee can give you a great insight into what it is like working for the company. Talk to the right people. It pays to be wary of past employees if their leaving was sudden or seems unexplained and their opinions are overly intense. Not every employee leaves on good terms, and sometimes you can find a biassed opinion, use your good judgement and even seek a second opinion to see if you get the same response.

Interview – even though you might not be quite sure change is right for you, make sure you don’t show doubt in the interview. If you do this, you are not going to get the job. On driving home from the interview, what was your gut feeling? If you feel excited, that’s great news; let’s hope you get the job. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to call and ask rather than wait to start. If you aren’t feeling it, chances are, it’s not the right move for you.

Company values – through all the avenues you have explored about this company, their website, their socials, on the walk-through and interview, were you made aware of the company values, and did they feel genuine when discussing those, be able to give examples, does it match the company branding & marketing online and importantly, do they align with your own personal values? If they don’t align with your own, ask yourself if this is the job for you.

Position information – overall, do you have a clear picture of the role and the person they are looking for and do you feel you fit the role requirements, remember starting a new job is nerve-wracking for everyone, so it’s easy to doubt yourself, maybe ask someone who has worked with you or knows you well what they think of the job fit to the information received.
