Project: 1347- B2A Inland Rail Bridge Short Street
Location: Short Street, Broadford, Victoria
Client: John Holland
Project Manager: Justin McLean

About Inland Rail Bridge Project

The Short Street Bridge replacement is part of Inland Rail’s Melbourne-to-Brisbane freight rail upgrade. This infrastructure project transforms Australia’s freight network, enabling double-stacked trains to move goods faster and more efficiently between major cities and ports.

The project required fabrication of two 70.3-tonne high-strength steel bridge girders with precision welding and quality control, surface treatment for long-term durability, and complex transport logistics for oversized load delivery.

Our Solution

Bowhill Engineering is proud to have contributed to @Inland Rail’s Beveridge to Albury (B2A) Tranche 2 project on Short Street, delivering the critical bridge structure in Broadford, Victoria. Our metal fabrication capabilities, combined with our experience in transport infrastructure and structural steel engineering projects, made us the ideal partner for this critical component of Australia’s largest freight rail project.

Our team successfully completed two high-strength steel girders, each measuring 35.1m long, 1.2m wide and 3.309m high, weighing 70.3 tonnes and the cross girders which tie the two together.

Led by Project Manager Justin McLean, our team worked closely with Inland Rails construction partner John Holland to meet the required delivery schedule and ensure the girders satisfied all specifications and quality standards.

Key highlights from the project:

  • Timeline & Execution: The girders were delivered and installed on schedule, ensuring no delays to the broader bridge construction program.
  • Client Collaboration: Strong communication and partnership with John Holland, along with the valued support of Hi-Spec and RJA, were instrumental in making the oversized delivery possible.

The works were completed without incident, with high safety and environmental standards maintained throughout. With the girders now installed, we look forward to seeing the continued progress of the bridge and its completion.
