We are proud to be a key player in one of South Australia’s largest and most impactful infrastructure projects: the Majors Road Interchange.
This $120 million undertaking, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments is set to transform traffic flow and connectivity in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, providing long-term benefits for commuters and businesses alike.
As local leaders in heavy structural steel fabrication, we are contributing both our expertise and resources to ensure the successful delivery of this large-scale project, demonstrating our continued commitment to South Australia’s infrastructure development.
Our involvement in this landmark project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering top-quality engineering solutions while supporting the local economy and fostering job growth.
Meeting The Infrastructure Needs Of A Growing Region
The Majors Road Interchange is designed to streamline traffic between the Southern Expressway and Main South Road, helping to alleviate congestion and enhance safety for thousands of daily commuters.
The project will also enhance accessibility to key locations such as the Tonsley Innovation District, Flinders Medical Centre, and the Australian Science and Research Park.
These improvements are expected to stimulate local economic growth by making it easier for businesses to operate and for people to travel to work and other destinations without the delays caused by traffic bottlenecks.
Our Contribution – High-Quality Fabrication And Logistics
At the heart of the Majors Road Interchange project is the use of heavy structural steel girders, produced here at Bowhill Engineering. These girders were manufactured using 100% regional South Australian labour, including the efforts of 13 apprentices who are part of our commitment to developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
Once completed, the girders were transported nearly 150 kilometres from our facility in Bowhill to the Majors Road construction site—a complex logistical operation that reflected both our technical expertise and ability to execute large-scale projects.
This intricate process involved careful planning and coordination to ensure the safe and timely arrival of the girders, which are now being installed as the project continues to take shape.
Supporting Regional Jobs And Economic Growth
Bowhill’s role in the Majors Road Interchange project is more than just about steel—it’s about supporting local jobs and the South Australian economy. The project is creating 245 full-time-equivalent jobs each year during its construction phase, contributing significantly to regional employment.
By relying on local talent and resources, we are strengthening the state’s economy while delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions. Our dedication to employing regional South Australians, particularly through apprenticeships, reflects our commitment to fostering long-term skills development and economic resilience.
Progressing Towards A Seamless Transport
The Majors Road Interchange is progressing smoothly and is currently well into its construction phase, all while minimising disruptions to existing traffic flows.
With significant milestones already achieved, including the installation of our fabricated steel girders, the next phases will focus on completing bridge structures, road surfacing, and finalising connections to key transport routes.
The next phases will involve completing bridge structures, road surfacing and finalising the major intersections that will streamline traffic flow between key southern routes.
The project is on track for completion by the end of 2025, and we remain committed to delivering the highest standards of quality and precision throughout the construction process.
As we continue to support the development of this vital infrastructure, we are excited about the long-term benefits it will bring to South Australia.
Looking Ahead
The installation of heavy steel girders, fabricated by Bowhill Engineering, marks a significant milestone in the development of the Majors Road Interchange.
We’re proud to be a driving force behind this project, ensuring its timely completion and contributing to a development that will revolutionise traffic flow, enhance safety, and boost economic growth across South Australia.
By delivering high-quality steel fabrication and supporting local employment, we are building a more connected and resilient community.
As we complete our work on the Majors Road Interchange, we are excited to continue our involvement in other transformative projects across South Australia, further supporting the growth and development of vital infrastructure.
