Bowhill’s part of the project included a pair of 43m long 3-piece beams. These beams were quite long and slender and needed careful attention to ensure that they remained straight, as well as careful consideration to plan their handling as they progressed through the different stages at our facility without damage.
This was truly a joint effort with Williams Metal Fabrications as the main steelwork contractor, Bowhill Eng were included as their Subcontractor to complete the QA (relating to the girders only), fabrication, welding, and coating, whilst assisting the WMF team with the preassembly of the girders at Bowhill. The structure turned into a 43m long, 3.5 wide assembly weighing approximately 50t that was delivered and fitted out prior to being erected over the rail corridor. It was lifted and placed straight from the assembly location onto the abutments with a 1200t crane.
Collaboration was key to this project, specifically the program, QA, inspection, and preparation prior to handing the project back to the WMF team for completion was important to get right.
Bowhill have the specialized capability to handle larger elements together with the compliance systems to deliver high specification requirements for most industries, especially Defence. We are proud to have worked alongside Williams Metal Fabrications, McMahon Services and ANI to help deliver this important work.
