For the applicant, a Traineeship is a fantastic opportunity to gain a qualification whilst working. For the employer, the value in being open minded in the consideration and advertisement of traineeships, is the opportunity to attract a range of applicants of different ages and skills.

Traineeships are not reserved to school leavers, with applicants potentially offering work knowledge with similar or relevant skills that will support or enhance the qualification being completed. I started my Traineeship in Certificate III Business Administration at Bowhill Engineering in November 2018 after being made redundant in my previous job. I was looking for a job that wasn’t just a job, that would give me skills and challenge me while also allowing me to work with the knowledge that I had already gained working in administration over the last 4 years.

I had a solid foundation already and knew that the traineeship would help continue to build this. Not only through the work I’d do within my Certificate III at TAFE SA but the skills I would gain from my co-workers.

Through my traineeship, I found I had an interest in HR & WHS, I have always loved working with people, and this gave me the opportunity to work closely with colleagues.

Following the completion of my traineeship, I moved into an Administration Assistant role.  Bowhill Engineering then had the opportunity to take on another trainee, at the time I was able to assist her through her Certificate III as well.

In the last 12 months, I have taken on an HR Assistant role – gaining skills in Payroll, Work Health Safety & Return to Work including becoming a first aider. Assisting our HR Manager with onboarding Apprentices & Trainees & upskilling employees with internal & external training opportunities.

My traineeship at Boweng was a valuable stepping stone to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work full time and build a long-term career with Bowhill Engineering.

Traineeships are considered annually in November, further information is available via
