We worked with McConnell Dowell over the years. When the Granite Island (400T) project came up, it was apparent that it required a novel approach to deliver it efficiently and within the ambitious timeline. The successful approach that MCD developed was bold. It used larger spans, a hybrid approach involving the permanent and temporary steelwork, and synchronized shuffling of the components, allowing the project to meet its target.

Given the sensitivity of the schedule to a multitude of critical path elements, MCD needed a team of subcontractors that wouldn’t let them down. Even one aspect of work would have been enough to delay the whole project. So, they needed a team that they could rely on.

Bowhill Engineering is proud to have been chosen for this responsibility. We worked proactively to secure materials and plan a prioritized delivery schedule. We managed to deliver these critical items just in time. The project ran like clockwork until the program was achieved (from Sept 2020 – June 2021).

As planned, the new Causeway was opened on the 22nd of December 2021 to a packed audience of excited onlookers. Incredibly this 650m long structure was completed on-site in just 9 months, a testament to the whole team’s ability to support the project and each other and MCD’s ability to plan and run the project so effectively.

We have full respect for the operators that drove their 200t crawler cranes onto 1200 x 1200mm fabricated box beams Bowhill supplied as temporary steelwork. That’s what you call trust in engineering and fabrication!
